Opportunity Description

The Physician Assistant will perform duties in The Department of Juvenile Justice clinics and at the clinics and shelters. The Physician Assistant will have room(s) available in which to provide examinations and will have a workspace in which to perform his/her administrative duties.

Job Duties

Patient Care:
Provides medical care to  adolescents keeping safety & security measures paramount.
Takes relevant patient history.
Identifies patient needs and makes diagnoses.
Develops and implements treatment plans using diagnostic data.
Performs complete well-care examinations including physical examinations.
Performs complete gynecological histories and physical examinations as indicated. 
Writes prescriptions and informs patients about medications prescribed, garnering parent/guardian consents when needed.
Completes medical forms and documentation related to patient care.
Makes and tracks all referrals to other agencies and providers, with follow-up care provided.
Assists with phlebotomy, as needed, to ensure smooth patient flow. 
Administers immunizations as needed.
Distributes medication to patients.
Reviews all pertinent laboratory results and makes appropriate treatment decisions based on these data.
Completes Court Orders and all other mandated paperwork.
Works collaboratively with physician and specialists for consultation and referral purposes.
Evaluates and treats  employees [ONLY on an emergent basis].
Administers vaccinations to employees based on protocol. 
Coordinates organization of prescription medications involving ordering refills for secure and non-secure detainees, discarding medications that are discontinued and preparing medications for NSD. 
Adheres to the organization “Clinical Guidelines” Notebooks for adolescent care.
Meets with designated supervising physician on a regular and predetermined basis, in order to receive recommendations and collaborate towards delivering quality health care to patients, based on accepted standards of-care.
Participates in Peer Review process, as defined by organization.
Encourages health promotion, disease prevention, and health maintenance. Provides health education on topics including but not limited to preventive medicine and counseling on chronic diseases, as well as parenting, prenatal, nutrition, family- planning, medication usage, and stress management. 
Provides patient advocacy, as appropriate for the site. 
Participates in patient outreach, as appropriate for the site
Other duties as assigned
 
Administrative Duties:
Adheres to the organizations “Provider Training Manual.” 
When in the field, acts as on-site supervisor of medical assistants.     
Teaches medical assistants about patient care and triage, to improve patient flow, and communicates with Nursing Supervisor regarding status of flow at clinic site.     
Participates in case conferences in which patient care is discussed.     
Assists the Medical Director in the development and implementation of medical protocols and medical forms.
May initiate and participate in research related to health care or allied fields, in collaboration with the Medical Director.
Makes suggestions to clinic supervisors to improve patient care. 
 

Education

Must be licensed and registered as a physician assistant by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to practice as a PA in New York.
Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS)

 

Experience & Skills Required

Experience in the following practice areas: Acute Care, College Health, Community Health, Family Health, Holistic Care, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, School Health, and/or Women's Health.  
 

Certifications

New York State Licensed Physician Assistant
Board-Certified Physician Assistant 
DEA Certified Physician Assistant
